Maharashtra on Sunday announced the extension of the state-wide lockdown till May 31 midnight even as the novel coronavirus cased in the states surged past 30,000 on Saturday. In a notification issued Sunday noon, the Maharashtra government said that the state is extending the lockdown in a bid to contain the virus spread.
"To take certain emergency measures to prevent and contain the spread of the virus, the government in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 2 of the Epidemic Diseases Act 2005, it is expedient to extend the lockdown in the entire state of Maharashtra further till the midnight of May 31, 2020. On Friday, Maharashtra reported 1,606 new coronavirus cases in 24 hours, pushing the state's tally over 30,000 mark -- 30,706 -- according to the state government.
